"Rara Avis..."

...means "rare bird", and this is a series of pictures of one such creature.  Sent to me via e-mail by a friend, I happily share it with you all!  Enjoy!

A Rare treat... an albino hummingbird. Something that is seldom seen and almost NEVER photographed.

Albino hummingbird

Fifteen-year-old photographer Marlin Shank was fortunate enough to capture
several images of a rare albino ruby-throated hummingbird while in a park in
Staunton , Va

Very high quality photographs for such a fleeting subject...

Pass this on so others may enjoy

this rare and beautiful sight!

Very pretty.

I do feel a bit sorry for hummingbirds. They're at the other end of the evolutionary scale from sloths. Hummingbirds use up so much energy flying that they have to spend every waking moment feeding on their high calorie diet of sugar rich nectar, visiting hundreds of flowers every day. Most of their brain capacity is used up building up a mental map of the flowers they visit, so they can plan a route that includes as many refilled nectar sources as possible. They are slaves on an evolutionary treadmill of survival.

I think I'd rather be a sloth, even with all the mouldy stuff growing on the fur. Eat slow, digest slow and ponder. :)

Miss Banana saw this and wishes she has a pet hummingbird - when I told her it would be a sin to keep God's creatures in cage, the bird would be unhappy not to be free................then little girl started to cry..............and was sorry she even suggested the idea!!

OMG!!! WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

The hummingbird is the national bird of Jamaica, which is part of why I find these pictures so appealing!
